
This was a few months back at this point (October-ish) but Winslow pointed to the zero in the upper left of this UPC label and said, "balloon floating away." The other zeros are apparently still tethered to the ground by "strings" (the vertical bars). I love that a UPC symbol is more intelligible to him than it is to me and even more than that I love that numbers (and letters as well) are still just pictures to him. Up to this point, the point of me writing this ,we have made no efforts to get Winslow to recognize numbers or letters. We want him to have a concept of number, of quantity, before an abstract glyph is attached to the name. As to letters, perhaps our reasoning is more perverse, but we want some mystery to remain in his world for as long as possible. That begins to dissipate once a child begins to read. As a Kindergartener teacher I have seen this first hand.
