The Metaphysics of Humor

The other night while at a dinner party, our eleven year old host was repeatedly humped by a dachshund puppy (2 months old). Efforts to give the child a break by providing fresh, humpable shirt sleeves failed every time. The eleven year old explained the singular attraction this way: "he probably only does it on me because I'm a teenager. Or... I mean because I'm the closest to being a teenager." At least one dinner guest thought this very funny.

At another point in the evening, we were playing a game in which you encourage your teammates to guess a word based on a verbal clue you provide. If I were to say, "you read it", you might answer "book" and you'd be right. There were other complexities in the rules that I won't bother with here. When it came my turn, I drew the word "key", issued the clue, "blank hole" and realized my mistake immediately. The team yelled the word "ass" in unison. At least one dinner guest thought this very funny.

Which do you prefer. Which is funnier? I ask because I was recently discussing the nature of humor, specifically: when you're slain by some instance of comedy, how do you respond to and deal with someone who remains profoundly indifferent?

It seems like there are three things to vote on:
1. The actual humping
2. The 11 year old's comment about teens and sex
3. The ass/key hole

My vote is for #2. On the indifference question, I would say that things are actually funniest when there are people around who don't share in the humor. I think of church, staff meetings, prison. When surrounded by "other humored people", those "in the know" are catapulted to an entirely new level of enjoyment.

Ass Key. Anything with 'ass' is funny. Plus, I feel bad for anyone getting publicly humped by a dog (or anything, really). I'd want to laugh, but I'd feel bad and pray that it doesn't start happening to me. Actually, I think you should have skipped the story and just asked, "Puppy Hump or Ass Key - which is funnier?" Then supplied the story once you got all the results.

And to answer the other question, I'd try and keep the incident to myself around the indifferent person/people in question, but secretly be relishing it so I can re-tell the story just right to Brian when I get home. What is a significant other if not the one person you can count on to get the joke?

As to John John's comment, I was more interested in the kid's remark than the actual humping, which, as Valarie pointed out, is humiliating but it's not even interesting or textured humiliation, just you're-getting-humped-by-a-dog humiliation. But you are right, for some people the hump would be the funniest part. i guess as someone who grew up with dogs I don't think much about getting humped, it's like being offered pretzels, sometimes it happens.

The half-brilliant, half-naive comment about being an almost teen is clearly the funnier in my mind, mostly because I like to half-believe in ludicrous explanations for things, as a nostalgic yearning for when I fully believed. However, being humped by a dog or watching a dog hump someone else, even when it's a tiny dachshund no longer than a tofu pup, is deeply mortifying to me, only laugh-worthy in a panicky kind of way, not at all like pretzels. I also agree that, although it's a bit disappointing at the instant of comedic action when you expect everyone to share in your mirth and get only blank faces instead, that if you can recount the story later to someone who doesn't give you a blank face, then it's all the more funny.

I agree with Irene. I also think that humor that evolves from an unstructured situation has merit over a humororus situation that comes out of Taboo, the game is built to create those moments, whereas the 11 yr olds brain is less programmed.

I must admit anything with ass is humorous.... but that's just my 11-year-old boy self reacting. Bathroom jokes rule! Upon reflection I think it's very funny to think that an 11 year old only thinks teenagers hump or are humpable.

I have to place my vote for"close enough to a teenager". Dog humping is funny. It's totally natural for a dog to fuck your leg, why get hung up on the embarassment of public sex with a member of a different species, when you can spend some time deliciously daydreaming in front of your friends website about two paws locked around a human calf holding on for dear life. Also unwelcome sexual advances are funny. What's really funny though is this humping went on for so long that people actually offered up parts of their body to the dedicated dog and then were rejected. Which led up to the now classic line of the 11 year old being close enough to a teenager to merit the dog's sole attention. I feel "blank hole" is more of a location joke, it was a very funny and exciting moment when the whole team screamed "ass!" at the same time. The mob's instinctual sexual response creating a sense of drama and power for the mob. How come no one is talking about the humiliation felt by Ben for inadvertantly and unsuspectingly setting up a raucous ass joke? The young teen and the pup story is a little more nuanced-What did that dog smell?-Was the dog in love?-Why didn't the dog fuck the other guests?-Did the other guests feel inadequate? I personally feel had I been at that party I could have coerced the dog to wrap his front paws tightly around my forearm while valiantly thrusting his pelvis against my arm.
It probably wouldn't have been that funny but it may have beautiful.

Ass isn't funny because it's too predictable and too widely shared. No one was in the spotlight. The kid's remark was funny, but in more of a wry kind of way that might have made me smile but not laugh out loud.

The breach between someone who finds something funny and someone who doesn't is unbridgeable. That's just how it is.

i only get to visit this site on holidays, so i am about six months behind other comments. although not a choice, the boy saying "closest to being a teenager" is the funniest, because (if caught on video and shown to him when he WAS a teenager) it would be the most embarrassing. i am embarrassed for him already. his life will be hard.

The boy's comment is original and unexpected and who-thinks-that-way? I love it! (But wouldn't laugh AT him.) However, comparing the word pair Ass Key to Puppy Hump, I vote for Ask Key. Anything with a cuss word and a "k" sound is precious!
